All kids deserve a safe trip to and from school. Unfortunately, it appears that it is not that uncommon for North Carolina drivers to engage in actions that could endanger students. One such type of conduct is not obeying the restrictions on passing stopped school buses. According to an estimate from last year, each day 3,100 cars do such illegal passing here in North Carolina.
Such behavior by drivers could result in students getting hit while walking to or from a school bus. The injuries from such accidents could have impacts for a child for a very long time, possibly even for the rest of his or her life.
This week, the North Carolina State Highway Patrol is engaging in a special campaign aimed at promoting safe driving near school buses here in the state.
The campaign includes additional enforcement efforts against unsafe driving conduct around school buses, such as the illegal passing of stopped buses. This includes added monitoring of school bus routes at the school day’s start and end.
School bus safety education efforts are also a part of the campaign.
This special campaign is called Operation Stop Arm. It started today and is scheduled to go until Friday.
How effective do you think this campaign will be at getting the message across to the state’s drivers of the importance of obeying the special traffic safety rules regarding school buses? Why do you think illegal passing of stopped school buses is still so common here in North Carolina?
