1 teen dead, 1 injured in North Carolina car accident

A 16-year-old boy was killed in a tragic single-car accident near Johnston County, according to local sources.  The North Carolina resident was driving, and authorities have attributed the car accident to driver error. A passenger in his vehicle was also injured, but no charges are expected to be filed as the driver lost his life.

According to the limited information provided by the report, around 7:15 a.m. the morning of Oct. 4 the 16-year-old was driving on County Line Road when his vehicle, for reasons currently unknown, left the road on the right. The driver overcorrected, attempting to return to the road, causing his vehicle to leave the road on the left before striking a tree. The force of the impact overturned the vehicle.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. His passenger, who remains unidentified by police pending the notification of next-of-kin, was rushed to a local hospital. That individual's injuries are not considered life-threatening, but no further information was available as of this report.

Depending on the outcome of the investigation into the car accident, the deceased driver's estate could be held financially responsible for the crash. In those circumstances, the injured passenger could file a personal injury lawsuit in a North Carolina civil court against the driver's estate, as well as anyone else with ownership interest in the vehicle involved in the crash. Such a case would require evidence of the driver's negligence, which seems apparent based upon the description of the crash, before the court will consider an award of monetary damages to the injured party.
