Car accident in North Carolina leads to 1 death

A three-car accident in Rowan County sent six people to the hospital and one to the morgue, according to local officials. North Carolina authorities say the car accident, which took place on Interstate 85 on the afternoon of Nov. 24, claimed one life and seriously injured one other person. So far, no charges have been announced against anyone involved.

According to the accident report, a vehicle driven by an unknown person was experiencing tire troubles, so the driver pulled to the side of the southbound lanes of I-85. A second vehicle, transporting several individuals, stopped to render aid. As the driver of the disabled vehicle exited his SUV to retrieve tools, a third SUV ran off the road, striking and killing the driver before striking the vehicle that stopped to help.

Six people were injured, with one person suffering injuries described as serious. The other five escaped with comparatively minor injuries. It is unclear which vehicles the injured parties occupied, or if the driver of the third vehicle was among those injured. Police shut down all southbound lanes to facilitate their investigation.

In a car accident of this type, it appears likely that the third driver who lost control of the vehicle could end up facing criminal charges. Even if no charges are filed by North Carolina authorities, the family of the deceased driver as well as all of those injured in the crash are entitled under state law to file wrongful death and/or personal injury lawsuits against the third driver, and anyone else believed to have contributed to the crash. These suits are civil in nature and are not contingent upon a conviction in criminal court.
