Tractor-trailer accident in North Carolina kills 1

A man in Whitsett tragically lost his life the night of Nov. 8, according to state police. Investigators in North Carolina have confirmed the tractor-trailer accident killed an unidentified driver and injured several other people. Police say they have not discounted any possible contributing factors to the accident at this time.

According to the accident report, a 24-year-old woman apparently made an unsafe lane change while headed eastbound on Interstate 40, which took her vehicle into the path of a tractor trailer. Her vehicle continued off the road, colliding with a parked work van. She suffered life-threatening injuries in the crash.

The driver of the tractor-trailer she allegedly cut off then lost control of the larger vehicle, causing it to veer into the right-side lanes of the highway. This caused the tractor trailer to strike a vehicle traveling alongside, driven by an unknown person. Both vehicles went off the right side of the road, with the tractor-trailer overturning onto the driver's side of the second vehicle. That driver was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger in the vehicle suffered minor injuries, as did the tractor-trailer driver.

tractor-trailer accident has the capacity to be devastating, given the size of the vehicle involved. However, it does not appear the driver of the tractor trailer was at fault in this instance. The injured woman who initially lost control of her vehicle will likely be investigated by police to determine whether her actions materially contributed to the accident. If this can be proved, even if no criminal charges are filed, the injured parties and the family of the deceased could sue her in North Carolina civil court for personal injury and/or wrongful death.
