2 dead in North Carolina car accident

Two people were killed in a two-vehicle crash in Camden County, according to law enforcement authorities. The North Carolina Highway Patrol has confirmed the car accident took place around 11:30 a.m. on Nov. 23 on U.S. 17 in the South Mills area. One of the drivers was among the fatalities, and no charges have been filed against the other driver at this time.

According to the State Highway Patrol report, a 70-year-old woman from Chesapeake was attempting to navigate a turn onto U.S. 17 South when her vehicle struck another southbound car. The force of the impact damaged both vehicles and killed the 70-year-old driver as well as a 46-year-old female passenger. Two other people, another 46-year-old woman and a 13-year-old girl, were both injured in the crash, but were expected to recover.

The driver of the other vehicle, who has not been identified by police at this time, was extracted from the other vehicle by witnesses, though that individual's condition is not known at this time. Police are uncertain what caused the crash. Their investigation is ongoing at this time.

In a fatal car accident, many factors can lead to tragedy. North Carolina criminal charges may not be forthcoming in this accident as one of the two drivers perished, and charges are not filed posthumously. However, it may be possible for the families of the deceased and the injured parties to file personal injury and/or wrongful death suits against the deceased driver's estate, as well as anyone else with ownership interest in the vehicle, in a civil court setting.
