Drunk driver charged in accident in North Carolina

A 57-year-old man is facing charges after the tragic injury of two children and two adults in a Gastonia crash. North Carolina police say the man is believed to have been intoxicated behind the wheel when the car accident occurred. The alleged drunk driver is facing charges, and the injured parties are currently recovering in hospital.

According to the accident report, the crash happened just before 7 a.m. on the morning of Dec. 20. A vehicle carrying two children, aged 11 and 7, was stopped at a stop light when it was rear-ended by a pickup truck operated by now-accused driver. The force of the impact slammed the struck vehicle into a third vehicle in front of it. The driver managed to escape the vehicle, but the children remained stuck in the back seat.

Eventually, bystanders were able to rescue the 7-year-old girl, and reassure her during the critical emergency. The 11-year-old was eventually extricated by arriving emergency personnel, but he suffered critical brain damage as a result of the impact. The driver accused of causing the accident had his license revoked previously. He had a prior DWI conviction 20 years ago.

An accident caused by a drunk driver is tragic under any circumstances, because of the preventable nature of such accidents. Here in North Carolina, the man will likely face serious criminal consequences if he is found guilty of driving under the influence. Separately, the family he struck is entitled to file personal injury lawsuits against him in civil court, and if the court rules in their favor, any damages recovered can go toward helping the injured victims to recover from their injuries.
