16-year-old charged in car accident

A 16-year-old in Huntersville is facing charges after a serious accident killed one woman and injured several other people. Two dogs were reportedly also injured in the car accident. The minor is due in a North Carolina court on Jan. 28 to face charges, including involuntary manslaughter. Due to his young age and the seriousness of the accusations, special attention to his criminal defense will be necessary.

Details about the accident are still scarce, but it has been confirmed the crash took place on Dec. 30 on a local road. Apparently, for reasons unknown, the vehicle driven by the 16-year-old crashed head-on into an SUV headed the other direction. Photos from the accident site show the passenger car he was driving totaled by the force of the impact. Both he and a 16-year-old passenger were injured in the crash and were taken to a local hospital.

The occupants of the SUV did not fare as well. The three individuals, a man, woman and child, were all injured in the crash. The driver was pronounced dead of her injuries the day following the accident. The man remains unconscious as of the media report, and the child suffered broken bones. Two dogs, who were also riding in the SUV, were killed in the accident as well.

The teenage driver will face serious consequences for his role in the car accident, which could include jail time and fines. In addition, the injured parties in both vehicles and the family of the deceased woman are entitled under North Carolina law to file personal injury and/or wrongful death suits against both the driver and anyone else with ownership interest in the vehicle the teen was driving. It may also be necessary to examine the family's own motor vehicle and homeowner's insurance policies to determine the extent of any applicable underinsured or uninsured coverage.
