Car accident kills teen in North Carolina

A tragic accident caused the death of a 17-year-old boy in Catawba County in the early morning of Jan. 30, according to local police. The driver involved in the single-car accident managed to survive the crash that killed his passenger. The accident is still being investigated by North Carolina police, but alcohol and road conditions are not believed to be factors in the fatal crash.

According to reports, the 19-year-old male driver apparently swerved while driving on Kool Park Road around 5:30 a.m. The man told police he was swerving to avoid another vehicle, but that vehicle has not been located at this time. The swerve caused the man to lose control of the vehicle, which left the road and crashed into a creek before overturning. The driver managed to escape the vehicle and seek help at a nearby home.

Unfortunately, the 17-year-old male passenger was trapped in the vehicle and was reported dead at the scene, though no official cause of death has been released. The driver was rushed to a local hospital for treatment of unknown injuries. He has not been charged so far, but police are still continuing their investigation.

Sometimes, a car accident is just that -- a tragic accident that could not be avoided. However, it remains possible that the driver of the car could have reacted poorly to a tense road situation, or could have been distracted at the wheel. As such, criminal charges may still be forthcoming. Even if no charges are filed, the family of the deceased passenger can file a wrongful death suit against the driver in North Carolina civil court.
