Fatal car accident claims 1 life in North Carolina

A 63-year-old woman is tragically dead following a serious car accident in north Charlotte, according to local sources. North Carolina police are in the process of filing charges against a 46-year-old male driver involved in the car accident. He has contended that the lowered visors in his SUV impeded his vision, leading to the initial collision.

According to the accident report, around 5:45 p.m. the man was driving his SUV northbound on Interstate 485 when traffic ahead of him on the highway began to slow down as a result of congestion. The 63-year-old woman had slowed her vehicle to approximately 15 mph when she was struck from behind by the SUV, which failed to slow down in time. The force of the impact sent her car spinning across open lanes before it was struck by another vehicle.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene. The man said his visibility was limited and he did not see the backup of traffic before it was too late. However, this has not stopped police from moving forward with a misdemeanor charge of death by vehicle. No court date has been announced at this time.

Even if the man is eventually cleared of the criminal charge filed against him, the family of the deceased woman can still argue for justice in a civil court setting. By filing a wrongful death suit, they can offer evidence pertaining to the car accident as gathered by North Carolina authorities to prove his material contribution to the fatal crash. If they are successful, the family could be awarded damages by the court.
