Car accident in North Carolina kills 1

A serious crash in Yadkinville has led to the arrest of a male tractor-trailer driver after another individual was killed. The car accident happened on Interstate 77 in Yadkinville, North Carolina, the afternoon of April 11. One individual, a 43-year-old woman, was killed in the crash, while another person was rushed to a local hospital. The driver faces misdemeanor charges, though it does not appear that he is in police custody at this time.

According to the reports, the tractor-trailer was headed northbound on I-77 when traffic slowed and stopped as cars merged into a single available lane. Police say the driver did not reduce his speed in time, causing his truck to smash into a passenger vehicle. The vehicle caught fire, trapping the driver inside. The 43-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

The force of the impact caused a chain reaction involving a vehicle towing a trailer, as well as another tractor-trailer and a van. Remarkably, only one other person was hurt in the collision, and that individual was taken to a local hospital with injuries described as non life-threatening. The tractor-trailer driver was charged with failure to reduce speed, as well as misdemeanor death by motor vehicle. The highway was closed for some time while accident reconstruction specialists determined the cause of the accident.

In addition to the misdemeanor charges filed against the driver, North Carolina law will allow the family of the deceased woman, as well as the injured individual, to file civil lawsuits against the driver and possibly the company he works for. These suits, for wrongful death and personal injury, respectively, are handled in civil court. Evidence of the truck driver's negligence leading to the car accident is required if the court is to award damages to the injured party and/or the grieving family.
